American flight controllers are more and more seeking second jobs and reporting ill, as they continue to work without pay during the government shutdown, the transport chief has stated.

"The controllers are becoming strained," Sean Duffy told a news outlet on Sunday, as some flights were grounded on the Californian coast due to staffing shortages.

Following the federal closure on October 1st, air traffic controllers, who are considered essential workers, were instructed to continue performing their duties without pay.

But some have been missing, causing terminals to halt or reduce their flight operations, which has added to delays due to weather and other issues.

Over 3,000 American flights were postponed on the weekend, and the secretary said he anticipates the situation to deteriorate further.

"I observe the stress," he said in an discussion on Sunday Morning Futures, noting that he had met with multiple professionals to hear their concerns directly.

"They're taking side jobs, they're out there searching, 'Should I drive Uber, can I secure an alternative of income to cover expenses?'" he added.

The secretary added that on the previous day twenty-two notifications at airports indicated flights would be held up due to a lack of employees - one of the highest after the closure began.

The American federal closure entered its 26th day on the weekend, rendering it the second most extended shutdown in the past.

Duffy has consistently cautioned that flight authorities would reduce the number of aircraft in the air if there is a shortage of safety personnel.

In his conversation, he declined to respond directly when questioned if it was secure to fly in the US, and instead issued a direct appeal to the professionals.

"I require my staff focused on the flight paths, not on the monetary matters at their households," the official stated.

On Sunday, some planes were grounded at LAX due to employee deficits, leading to interruption at the fifth-busiest terminal in the nation and among the most crowded in the globe, as well as additional travel extending north to the metropolis of Oakland, California.
