Gavin Newsom States He Is Evaluating a White House Bid in 2028

The California governor, a prominent member of the Democratic party, has disclosed that he will determine whether to run for president in 2028 after the 2026 congressional elections wrap up.

"Absolutely, I would be lying if I said no," the governor stated when pressed about contemplating a White House bid following the 2026 elections. "That wouldn't be honest. And I can't do that."

The governor's current term as California's leader ends in the start of 2027, and he cannot run again. But, he cautioned that any decision is not imminent.

"It's up to destiny," he said.

Rising Profile as a Administration Opponent

The California governor has come to the forefront as a high-profile opponent of the current federal leadership, using his digital presence and advocating for a proposition that would increase the party's House seats in response to GOP gerrymandering. This move has invited attacks from critics.

Clash on Transportation

The former president's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, claimed that Newsom is indifferent about Californians in a Sunday segment on a major news network. Duffy revealed intentions to cut government money from the state and warned revoking the state's ability to grant commercial driver's licenses.

"I intend to cut $160 million from the state," Duffy declared, following a recently reported fatal crash in California involving an unauthorized semi truck driver that caused fatalities and injured individuals.

The governor's team highlighted that the national authorities had reauthorized the worker's status multiple times, which enabled him to receive a trucking license under U.S. law.

Duffy had before indicated he was withholding $40m from the state for failing to implement linguistic standards for CDL holders.

Pointed Reply from the Governor's Office

"Former D-list reality star, now cabinet member, continues to misunderstand federal law," Newsom's office responded in a recent statement addressing the secretary's comments. "For now, unlike this clown, we focus on reality: The state's CDL holders had a death rate significantly lower than the U.S. average. Texas – the single state with a larger number of CDL holders – has a rate almost 50% higher than the state. Data speaks for itself. The federal leadership misleads."

Voter Sentiment and Future Prospects

A recent poll found that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters and almost half of voters believed that Newsom should run for president in 2028. Since Trump took office, his approval ratings has increased to an average of a third from around 30%, while his disapproval has decreased from an mean of more than 40% to current figures.

Earlier this year, Newsom stated while traveling several key regions that he had "no clue" about his intentions for 2028.

He also referenced his personal struggles, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the age of five.

"The notion that a person who got 960 on his SAT, who continues to find reading challenging, who was often seated at the back – the fact that this is even suggested is, alone, extraordinary," he commented. "No one can say? I am eager to see who emerges in 2028 and who rises to the occasion. And that is the issue for the voters."
