Missing Bach Compositions Performed for First Time in Over Three Centuries
Recently identified organ compositions by the musical genius Bach have been presented and executed in Germany for the first time in three hundred twenty years.
The nation's Culture Minister Wolfram Weimer called the unearthing of the two pieces a "great moment for the global music scene".
They initially attracted notice of a Bach researcher in 1992 when he was organizing historical musical documents at the Belgian royal collection.
The musical compositions - the Chaconne in D minor and G minor Chaconne - were undated and without attribution. The researcher spent the following three decades working to verify the origin of the pieces.
Memorable Concert
They were presented at the Thomas Church in the eastern German municipality, where Bach is laid to rest and where he served as a church musician for over two decades.
The pair of works were played by organist from the Netherlands the musical performer, who said he was privileged to be able to perform them for the initial performance in three hundred twenty years.
He said the compositions were "of a very high quality" and would be "a great asset for organists today, as they are also suitable for smaller organs".
Cultural Relevance
They are thought to have been written early in Bach's career, when he was working as an organ instructor in the municipality of the German town in Thuringia.
The researcher, who is now the head of the Bach Archive in Leipzig, said they exhibited several features distinctive to the artist.
"In terms of style, the works also feature elements that can be identified in the composer's creations from that era, but not in those of other musicians," he said.
They are considered to have been written down in 1705 by Bach's apprentice, the musical student.
At a revealing of the works, the researcher said he was "virtually certain that Bach had composed the pair of works" and they have now been included into the authoritative listing of his works.
