The top legal official in Texas Paxton is suing the manufacturers of acetaminophen, claiming the firms withheld safety concerns that the pain reliever posed to pediatric neurological development.

The lawsuit comes four weeks after Donald Trump advocated an unverified association between using acetaminophen - referred to as acetaminophen - during pregnancy and autism spectrum disorder in children.

Paxton is filing suit against Johnson & Johnson, which formerly manufactured the medication, the only pain reliever approved for pregnant women, and Kenvue, which presently makes it.

In a statement, he stated they "betrayed America by gaining financially from pain and marketing drugs regardless of the dangers."

The manufacturer asserts there is no credible evidence tying acetaminophen to autism spectrum disorder.

"These corporations lied for decades, deliberately risking numerous people to boost earnings," Paxton, from the Republican party, said.

Kenvue said in a statement that it was "seriously troubled by the dissemination of inaccurate information on the reliability of acetaminophen and the likely effects that could have on the health of American women and children."

On its online platform, the company also said it had "regularly reviewed the relevant science and there is lacking reliable evidence that shows a established connection between consuming paracetamol and autism."

Associations acting on behalf of medical professionals and health professionals agree.

The leading OB-GYN organization has said acetaminophen - the primary component in acetaminophen - is among limited choices for women during pregnancy to manage discomfort and elevated temperature, which can pose major wellness concerns if not addressed.

"In multiple decades of research on the consumption of paracetamol in gestation, no reliable research has successfully concluded that the use of paracetamol in any stage of gestation results in neurodevelopmental disorders in offspring," the association commented.

The court filing references latest statements from the Trump administration in asserting the medication is potentially dangerous.

In recent weeks, the former president caused concern from health experts when he advised women during pregnancy to "struggle intensely" not to use Tylenol when sick.

Federal regulators then issued a notice that medical professionals should think about restricting the consumption of Tylenol, while also mentioning that "a direct connection" between the drug and autism in minors has not been established.

Health Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr, who supervises the FDA, had pledged in April to initiate "a massive testing and research effort" that would determine the origin of autism spectrum disorder in a matter of months.

But specialists warned that identifying a unique factor of autism - considered by experts to be the result of a complex mix of inherited and environmental factors - would not be simple.

Autism spectrum disorder is a form of lifelong neurodivergence and impairment that impacts how persons encounter and engage with the surroundings, and is recognized using doctors' observations.

In his legal document, the attorney general - a Trump ally who is seeking the Senate - claims the manufacturer and J&J "willfully ignored and attempted to silence the science" around paracetamol and autism.

The lawsuit seeks to make the corporations "remove any marketing or advertising" that states Tylenol is secure for pregnant women.

The court case parallels the grievances of a group of guardians of young ones with autism and ADHD who filed suit against the manufacturers of acetaminophen in recently.

A federal judge rejected the lawsuit, stating studies from the family's specialists was not conclusive.
