The acclaimed documentarian has become beyond being a historical storyteller; he represents an institution, a one-man industrial complex. With each new documentary series heading for the small screen, all desire his attention.

Burns has done “more fucking podcasts than I ever thought possible”, he notes, nearing the end of his extensive publicity circuit comprising 40 cities, dozens of preview events and hundreds of interviews. “There seems to be a podcast for every citizen, and I believe I’ve appeared on most of them.”

Fortunately Burns possesses boundless energy, as loquacious behind the mic as he is productive in the editing room. The 72-year-old has appeared at locations ranging from Monticello to popular podcasts to promote one of his most ambitious projects: The American Revolution, a comprehensive multi-part historical examination that consumed the past decade of his life and arrived recently on public television.

Classic Documentary Style

Comparable to methodical preparation amidst instant gratification culture, Burns’ latest project intentionally classic, reminiscent of historical documentary classics as opposed to modern digital documentaries and podcast series.

However, for the filmmaker, who has built a career documenting American historical narratives including baseball, country music, jazz and national parks, its origin story represents more than another topic but fundamental. “As I mentioned to directing partner Sarah Botstein the other day, and she agreed: no future work will carry greater importance,” Burns contemplates during a telephone interview.

Massive Research Effort

Burns, co-directors Botstein and David Schmidt along with writer Geoffrey Ward referenced countless written sources and primary source materials. Numerous scholars, representing diverse viewpoints, provided on-air commentary in conjunction with distinguished researchers covering various specialties including slavery, Native American history and imperial studies.

Characteristic Narrative Method

The film’s approach will feel familiar to viewers of Burns’ earlier work. Its distinctive style incorporated gradual camera movements through archival photographs, abundant historical musical selections and actors reading diaries, letters and speeches.

Those projects established the filmmaker cemented his status; years later, presently the respected veteran of historical films, he can attract any actor he chooses. Appearing alongside Burns at a New York gathering, renowned playwright Lin-Manuel Miranda noted: “A call from Ken Burns commands immediate acceptance.”

The lengthy creation process proved beneficial in terms of flexibility. Recordings took place in recording spaces, on location through digital platforms, a method utilized throughout the health crisis. The director describes collaborating with actor Josh Brolin, who found a few free hours during his travels to perform his role portraying the founding father prior to departing to his next engagement.

Brolin is joined by multiple distinguished artists, established Hollywood talent, Domhnall Gleeson, Amanda Gorman, Jonathan Groff, Tom Hanks, Ethan Hawke, Maya Hawke, accomplished dramatic artists, British and American talent, versatile character actors, Wendell Pierce, Matthew Rhys, Liev Schreiber, and many others.

Burns adds: “Honestly, this could represent the finest ensemble gathered for any production. Their work is exceptional. Their celebrity status wasn’t the criteria. I became frustrated when someone asked, regarding the famous participants. I go, ‘These are actors.’ They are among the world’s best performers and they can bring this stuff alive.”

Nuanced Narrative

However, no contemporary observers remain, modern media required the filmmakers to rely extensively on primary texts, integrating individual perspectives of nearly 200 individual historic figures. This methodology permitted to introduce audiences beyond the prominent leaders of that era along with multiple who are seminal to the story”, several participants never even had a portrait painted.

Burns additionally pursued his personal passion for territorial understanding. “I love maps,” he observes, “featuring increased geographical representation in this project compared to previous works I’ve done combined.”

Civil War Reality

What had begun as a jumble of grievances leveled at London by far-flung British subjects throughout multiple disputatious regions quickly evolved into a vicious internal war, dividing communities and households and neighbour against neighbour. During the second installment, scholar Alan Taylor notes: “The main misapprehension concerning independence struggle is that it was something that unified Americans. This ignores the truth that Americans fought each other.”
