Winter Weather Systems Take Five Victims in the Gaza Strip Amidst Dire Conditions in Temporary Shelters.

Powerful winter gusts brought walls down onto flimsy tents sheltering people displaced by war in Gaza, killing at least four individuals. These deaths underscores the dangerous living conditions that persist after over 24 months of intense bombardment and severe shortages of aid.

Truce Provides Little Relief from Severe Elements

While a ceasefire has been active from last fall, aid groups state that Palestinians broadly lack the sufficient housing necessary to survive recurring winter storms.

Officials at Gaza City's largest medical facility, which received the victims, reported on this week that the deceased include two women, a young female, and a male adult.

Separately, the local health authority announced on Tuesday that a one-year-old boy died of hypothermia during the night.

"International actors has enabled us to witness loss of life in all its forms," said Bassel Hamouda following the burial. "While it is correct the bombing may have temporarily stopped, but we have seen all imaginable reasons of fatality in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Family Crushed in Tent Collapse

According to the medical center, three members of a single household — 72-year-old Mohamed Hamouda, his teenage relative, and his son's wife — were killed when an eight-metre tall wall fell on top of their dwelling in a area near the sea of Gaza City. No fewer than five additional people were injured in the event.

Their relatives on that day began clearing the rubble that had entombed their family and rebuilding the temporary homes for survivors.

Aid Efforts and Ongoing Emergency

United Nations agencies and its humanitarian partners were handing out shelter kits, tarps, warm covers and clothes as well as nutrition and hygiene supplies throughout Gaza, said the relevant UN coordination body.

The majority of the population reside in makeshift tents because their houses were reduced to rubble during the hostilities. Aid groups say not enough shelter materials are entering Gaza during the truce.

Fatality Numbers After the Ceasefire

The Gaza health ministry, which is part of the administration, says more than 440 individuals have been killed by gunfire and their remains brought to hospitals since the ceasefire began. The ministry maintains detailed casualty records that are considered largely accurate by UN agencies and outside analysts.

James Elder, spokesperson for the UN children’s agency Unicef, said on that day that at least 100 minors below eighteen years old – 60 boys and forty girls – had been lost their lives since the truce started because of armed actions, such as unmanned aerial vehicle attacks, air raids, artillery fire and employment of live ammunition. These numbers, he said, represented cases where sufficient details had been gathered to justify documentation, but the total toll is expected to be greater. He noted that many hundreds of minors had been wounded.

"Although 'explosions and shootings have slowed' during the ceasefire, they have not ceased," Elder informed reporters at a press conference in Geneva by video from Gaza City. "Therefore what the world now terms quiet would be viewed as a catastrophe in any other place," he said.

Third Cold Season of Hardship

Gaza’s population of more than 2 million individuals has been fighting to fend off the cold weather and bad weather away while enduring lack of humanitarian aid and a absence of more substantial temporary housing, which is urgently required throughout the colder season. This marks the third cold season since the conflict involving the state and Hamas began on 7 October 2023, when fighters attacked Israeli territory and murdered around twelve hundred individuals and abducted 251 others into Gaza.

The local health authority says over seventy-one thousand four hundred Palestinians have been fatally injured in Israel’s retaliatory offensive.
